Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, the upcoming live-action tentpole film featuring the titular Transformers (alien robots who transform into cars) and the Maximals (alien robots who transform into beasts) is heading our way this summer. We’re also getting, however, an animated film in summer 2024. Up until now, we didn’t know much about that film (not even the title!). A producer on the project, however, has recently revealed some details.

In an interview with Collider, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who is a producer on the animated project as well as Rise of the Beasts, shed some light on what the animated feature will be about—including confirming that it will take place on Cybertron, the home planet of the Transformers, and that it will feature the future Decepticon, Megatraon, and the future Autobot leader, Optimus (pictured above), who were friends before they became deadly enemies.

“We debated a lot about it in live action, and it just was financially impossible to do, which is, the origin story of young Megatron and young Optimus,” di Bonaventura said. “If you know the origin, they started as friends, and over time things devolved for them and they ended up on two sides. So we’re telling the young Optimus and the young Megatron story. We really are telling the origin story of all Transformers, both what they were at the beginning of it, to how they grow, to how they grow apart.”

The producer also teased that the feature lends itself well to a “natural trilogy” and that we’re “going to see Cybertron in a way you’ve never seen it.” He also added that it wasn’t a coming-of-age story but is about “young men who are finding their path.”

What path will they walk down? We’ll have to wait until the film comes out on July 19, 2024 to find out.
